Claude Cormier-Sugar Beach-An Illustration of Place

Place,

a word that has bedeviled landscape architect’s since who knows when. ‘Place,’ ’space,’ ‘non-place’ have been the much abused play-things of academics for a long time now and while in universities we may not have an agreed upon definition of the word ‘place,’ landscape architects make what they believe to be places, every day. That’s why when I saw Calude Cormier’s renderings for Sugar Beach in Toronto I was happily struck by the sense of place that came through his illustrations.

OH PIONEER! Interview with Kira Appelhans!

Kira Appelhans is one of those rare souls who actually gets going when the going gets tough. An acclaimed landscape architect in many respects Appelhans showed her ingenuity and flexibility during the economic downturn. When certain circumstances guided her to leave her post at an NYC firm Kira braved the unknown and decide to try her luck in yet unexplored facets of landscape architecure. Did the lack of a steady job slow her down her? No! In a scant year and a half Kira built a website ( www.working-earth.com),  taught at two of the best MLA programs in the country ( UTSOA  Austin and PENN Design ) participated in the esteemed Macdowell artist colony and had her landscape architecture work shown at the MOMA as a part of the Rising Currents project. Appelhans knows how to stretch the role of being a landscape architect and for that reason Plan and Section dubs her as an ‘OH PIONEER!’ to be recognized.

Oh Pioneers! Interview with Bradley Cantrell

NEW
WORDS

A pioneer to be sure, Bradley Cantrell is an assistant professor of landscape architecture at Lousiana State University and author of the upcoming book, Digital Drawing for Landscape Architecture.  Cantrell can easily contend with the most digitally savvy ‘rendering pros’  in the field and is using his skills to indicate the potential  digital tools have in the design process as well as the design presentation. What I find inspiring about Bradley Cantrell is his choice to be an educator and his role in shaping future discourse, and landscape architects, in regards to representation in landscape architecture.
